Remains

by Christian W. Thiede

I have vacuumed the rugs,
scrubbed the floors,
washed all the towels and sheets,
yet strands of your blonde hair still trip me up.

When I tossed
our photographs into a box
they fluttered like baby birds
with broken wings.

At night I lie in bed
with open swollen eyes
hug my pillow and imagine
your warmth, contours, and scent.

You are the last
and most legendary
in a long line
of failures.
