A Little Bird Told Me to Run a Virus Scan on all Your Poems

by Katharine Polenberg

(Runner-Up Winner of the 2007 Bird Flu Poetry Contest!)

So — you know somebody who knows a guy?
we all do
listen
I know somebody
I am the guy

who paints tiny Revelations?

on used band aids?

gives them away and sells
untitled self-portraits
for cash?

a little bird witness a double
murder while
being raped
blind-folded
don't worry

you might know the money
if you work for tips

I know whose luck is
a viral contagion and who has
isolated Providence in
a single round
in an unscarred chamber

don't think I don't know you
who I know
as sure and by heart as I know the

weight
and feel
of cut newspaper
bound in rubber bands
inside brown paper envelopes
it's the gift of the bag man!
