Catastrophe

Small yellow spots began creeping
up my thigh, between sleeping and
waking. And I knew
it was a lie, when my mother,
baking,
said, "you must have flu."
Not flu this time.
Surely something more arresting,
more sublime.
Consumption, or an interesting
fever, leading to destruction of the mind.
Escape from daily grind.
Not flu this time.
And two white pigeons float above the sea
and in their wake flutters catastrophe.
