Captain Fun's Swarthy Brew

by Joseph L. Conty, Jr.

May 7th, 2003

You might be asking yourself, "What is 'Captain Fun's Swarthy Brew?'" Well, I'll tell you. This column is all about me, Captain Fun, and my random thoughts. But, to be more precise, it's about us. We all have random thoughts, and the things that affect us are never clearly defined. Anything can have a significant impact on us. And I mean anything. Anything I choose to focus on, anything you yourself may have experienced in some way. I will try to focus on as many issues as possible, as pertains to my state of mind. Kind of a good feeling to have so much power.

Randomness is what governs the human mind. This column is about us as humans, for we all know the randomness that exists in the human mind. If structure and uniformity is what you desire, than read no more. This column is about everything, and nothing at the same time. We will focus on a plethora of different things. I invite all those who read to write me and challenge my positions; after all, that's what it's all about. I hope that you and I can learn some things together.

That said, today I would like to focus on an important area of my life: dreams. Some people dismiss dreams as leftovers from the brain. I think they can be very relevant. I often spend a whole day trying to understand my dreams. We all dream, and we all have different interpretations of our dreams, whether we choose to share them or not. I want to focus on a dream I had just last night. In this dream, I was in a bank, and I wrote a check for an extremely large amount of money, but I couldn't cash it. To boot, I was made indebted for the amount I had written, which wasn't clear. I saw the dream as a metaphor for our generation. A lot of us think we will be great, or expect to be famous, but we don't know how, or we refuse to put forth the effort. I say, DO IT! Put forth the effort! Turn off the goddamn television and get out there. Do something! It doesn't need to be about money, or getting drunk or fucked up. If you have a dream, get out there and try to live it. I'll bet you'll be better for it. We often get so caught up with wanting to be rich and famous that we never bother to put forth the effort. We think that shit will just happen for us, but it's not true. We need to get out there and do.

That is what this website is all about. A forum for those who want to write, who want to excel, and do what they love. Don't ever get discouraged. I am not one to be motivational by any means, but it occurs to me that apathy is destroying this country. Apathy and laziness. Change only comes about by effort. Only commitment will resolve in the attaining of one's goals. Optimism seems to be flowing out of me tonight, which is not normal, but I hope it all will ring true. And I hope you all will read on. We can only improve by reading and writing down our earnest truths. The goal of this column for me personally is to express my ideas and opinions on things, but these opinions are not held in stone. I want anyone who reads this to write back, for it is only by interaction that we can learn. This column is to be a learning experience for us all. We will not falter if we only persevere. So I leave you with much promise for the future, and I look forward to our days to come.
