Using the Pines

Pines rise into the sky
and disappear in darkness.
The rat uses the pines
to get on top of the roof
and disturb our sleep
at night with its noisy
bursts, seeking its way
inside where it's not
welcome. Some nights it
doesn't come, lets us rest.
Other nights it is there
pestering us. We curse
and punch the walls, hit
the ceiling with a broom-
stick and the rat shuts up.
What we need is a cat
to patrol the yard, use
those pines to get at
the rat in the roof and
disappear our nemesis.
