From the Castles in Spain poems

by Christopher Barnes

For the duration charabancs are buzzing,
Express trains trick-tracking,
Airbus motor whooshing zips in the sky,
Wheels shave to a halt.

Top-up and unfilling seats,
Soles rubbing the stretch of aisles,
Brittle-snap waits at terminuses.

My wits babble
To Casa de Campo park — race track,
Work-out posts, public ripples
On the swimming pool, purlieus tennis courts,
Footfault through sourish land,
Zoological pandas.

All dusted I moisten the flats of benches,
Spark off the Hotpoint, Vax the floor,
Still my mind wanders.

Cuisines, Madrid's grill-rooms, bars
Lay down every parish-pump range — Castilian for roasts
From a wood-blazing oven, meat and chick pea hash,
Gallego is seafood, Asturian is fried fish,
Levantine for paella.

Hootenannies here are hectic, motor gridlocks
At 4 a.m., durable 'til daybreak discos,
Summer floodlit geegees.

Bar LL where regulars roost, confab,
Peep at salacious gay porn
Between frolics to the all-night sauna.

You're an hour late, dinner
Is ready for the pot, the fobwatch clacks,
A boy kicks a ball across the street,
Sun switches up a ratchet.
